Missing teeth are one reason why people hate their smiles. Reports found that 57 percent of Americans cover their mouths when they smile due to insecurities with their teeth. This insecurity can cause them to feel too embarrassed even to see a dentist.

One solution to replace those missing teeth is dental implants. Our oral conscious sedation course team has created this guide to help you talk to your anxious dental patients about getting dental implants.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jaw. Dentists use this kind of treatment to replace a missing tooth. It is a highly preferred missing tooth replacement treatment because it mimics the function of a natural tooth and prevents muscle atrophy caused by bone loss.

What is a dental implant made of?

The invisible portion of the dental implant, also known as the “tooth root,” is made of titanium or titanium alloys. Scientists discovered that the jaw bone would naturally bond with the titanium. It helps create a strong bond between the two and helps the implant act as a natural tooth.

The visible portion of the dental implant, the tooth, can be a crown or prosthetic tooth made of porcelain. This portion of the implant usually is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and match existing teeth.

Reasons why patients would need a dental implant

Although dental implants are on the more expensive side, they can be very beneficial for patients. Here are some reasons your patients should consider getting dental implants.

Prevents bone loss

When a patient loses a tooth and does not get it replaced, they run the risk of bone loss in the jaw. Not having a tooth causes the bone in the jaw to get absorbed back into the body. Bone loss is commonly preserved by getting a dental implant. This implant gets inserted into the jaw and bonds and strengthens the jaw to prevent bone loss.

Long-lasting tooth replacement option

Unlike other tooth replacement options, dental implants are long-lasting. Dentures and bridges can break or get lost easily and need replacement more frequently. With the proper care of regular brushing, flossing and dentist check-ups, the crowns of the implants can last up to 15 years.

Helps patients eat better

Losing a tooth or multiple teeth impacts the way a patient is able to chew. Tooth loss might make it difficult or almost impossible for them to eat certain foods. Dental implants mimic the natural function of the tooth, making it easier for patients to eat their favorite foods again. Plus, patients do not have to worry about breaking or their tooth replacement falling.

How to help patients that are nervous about dental implants

Many patients get nervous just hearing that they need to get a dental implant. Their dental anxiety may cause them to believe that the procedure will be excruciating. It is important to reassure anxious dental patients that this treatment is not painful when performed by the correct professional - like a dentist or prosthodontist

They should know that dental anesthesia is administered during the procedure to help prevent any pain. If your dental patient is still nervous about getting a dental implant, let them know that they can always get oral conscious sedation

In order to administer this kind of sedation, you need to take an oral conscious sedation course. This kind of sedation is taken as a sedative and helps the patient feel relaxed. The sedation makes it easy for your patient to stay still throughout the procedure.
