When to start

Once they get their first tooth, you should continue to clean their gums, but begin using a soft bristled toothbrush with no toothpaste. This is the best way to begin to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Your child should have their first dental appointment before their first birthday or six months after they get their first tooth.
What to eat
Did you know that the foods your children eat will have a big impact on the health of their teeth? You want to have them eat things that are rich in calcium, which will help create strong teeth and bones. This includes foods like broccoli and leafy green vegetables. Other vitamins like vitamin D, vitamin B complex, copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are all also important in being sure that your children have healthy teeth.
When it comes to eating, there are also foods you should help your child stay away from. Chewing gum can actually be good for your oral hygiene because it stimulates saliva flow, which will help remove acids and bacteria from the teeth, but you want to be sure that you are chewing sugarless gum. Gum that uses sugar for sweetening can feed bacteria, which will cause plaque buildup and tooth decay. Gum sweetened with xylitol has been shown to be cavity-reducing compared to other sweeteners.
