There is no doubt that taking care of yourself physically is one of the best ways to ensure good health and prevent disease and illness. This goes for all parts of your body and definitely includes oral care.

Did you know that 42 percent of Americans do not make it to their dentist as often as they’d like to? Meanwhile, 85 percent of Americans believe that dental care is extremely important to their overall health. So, what is the problem?

There could be quite a few reasons why people avoid going to the dentist. A huge one is dental fear. In fact, nearly 75 percent of adults in the United States experience fear when it comes to the dentist. Many adults and especially children will avoid the dentist because they are afraid of pain, keeping their mouth open or other anxieties they may have. Skipping out on the dentist over fear is a sure-fire way to make any problems you have much worse. Though there is sedation training for dentists in order to help ease fear, not all patients know that.

If you are skipping out on your regular dental appointments, it is likely that you will have to have even MORE appointments in the future. That is because you may not catch any problems early enough or you may not be getting your teeth clean enough. Say you have a cavity, catching it before it begins to cause you pain at a regular dental cleaning is going to be a much easier and less painful procedure than coming in only once it starts causing you trouble.

You may be wondering what you need to look out for if you are skipping your dental cleanings. Here is what can happen:

While not getting your regular dental cleanings will obviously have an effect on the health of your teeth, gums and mouth, it can also have an effect on your entire body. Your mouth typically has quite a bit of bacteria because you eat, drink and breathe through it, which means that there are lots of opportunities for bacteria to enter your system. If you choose to forego your regular cleanings, here is what you could end up dealing with:

  • Endocarditis: this happens when the inner lining of your heart chambers become infected with bacteria or germs from another part of your body, like your mouth, and spreads through your bloodstream.
  • Cardiovascular disease: some research has suggested that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke could be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause.
  • Pneumonia: certain bacteria that can be found in your mouth can actually be pulled into your lungs, which can cause pneumonia and other respiratory issues.

If you are a dentist, be sure that you work with your patients to ensure that they are coming to their regular cleanings. Even if they are avoiding out of fear, there are plenty of things you can do as their provider to help make it more comfortable. Sedation training for dentists will help you make them feel less stressed. Providing minimal sedation is a great way to calm nerves and ease fear in the dental chair.
