  • 6:30 AM - 7:00 AM Registration/Breakfast

  • 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM - Anatomy and Physiology relevant to minimal sedation

  • 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM - Pharmacodynamic and Pharmacologic effect of common oral sedatives

  • 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Sedation/anesthesia continuum and minimal sedation complications and management

  • 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Definitions, terms, ASA physical status, fasting requirements

  • 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM - ADA guidelines, pre-operative preparation, personnel and equipment, monitoring and documentation, recovery and discharge

  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - History and Physical exam, medical comorbidities

  • 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM - Answer questions/Distribute certificates

Course Objectives

  • REVIEW UPDATED ADA GUIDELINES FOR PROVIDING SEDATION IN THE DENTAL OFFICE

  • DISCUSS DEFINITIONS AND TERMS RELATING TO DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SEDATION

  • DESCRIPTION OF ASA PHYSICAL STATUS CLASSIFICATION, FASTING ORDERS, AND RISK ASSESSMENT FOR SEDATING PATIENTS

  • DISCUSS COMMON MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL COMORBIDITIES IN PATIENTS AND HOW THEY MAY EFFECT SEDATION

  • DESCRIBE THE ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE AIRWAY, RESPIRATORY, CARDIOVASCULAR, AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND HOW THEY RELATE TO MINIMAL SEDATION

  • DISCUSS PRE-OPERATIVE PREPARATION, APPROPRIATE MEDICAL HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAM, PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS, AND DISCHARGE CRITERIA

  • REVIEW USE OF APPROPRIATE PHYSIOLOGIC MONITORING EQUIPMENT

  • DESCRIBE PHARMACOLOGICAL AND PHARMACODYNAMIC EFFECTS AND DOSAGES OF COMMONLY USED ORAL SEDATIVES

  • DESCRIBE THE PHYSIOLOGIC RESPONSES CONSISTENT WITH MINIMAL SEDATION

  • UNDERSTAND THE SEDATION/GENERAL ANESTHESIA CONTINUUM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY RECOGNITION AND TREATMENT OF UNEXPECTED RESPONSES TO MINIMAL SEDATION, INCLUDING HANDS-ON MANAGEMENT OF AIRWAY DIFFICULTIES
